Sheepdog Chronicles:
Tales from Our Farm

Approaching Winter's Edge

December has settled in, and the farm is easing into the quiet months ahead. Breeding season is nearly wrapped up, the ewes moving with that familiar, peaceful heaviness that hints at the promise of spring. The rams are slowing down too, their work almost done for the year, and with it comes a shift in the farm’s rhythm - from the urgency of autumn chores to the slower heartbeat of winter.

Out in the pastures, the grass is brittle and pale, but the sheep graze contentedly, unbothered by the cold. There’s a calmness to them that always feels contagious this time of year. The lambs of last spring are sturdy and grown now, carrying themselves with the confidence of almost-adults. Watching them move through the fields, it’s easy to forget just how small they once were.

We’re stacking the last of the hay and fire wood, checking fences, and preparing the barns for the deep winter weeks. Soon the work will shift to the steady cadence of daily chores - feeding, breaking ice, tending the flock - the inward kind of work that winter invites.

And as we move toward the holidays, the whole farm feels like it’s taking a breath. The lights are softer, the days shorter, and there’s a sense of waiting in the air. We’re all hoping for snow, the kind that muffles the world and makes the fields glow under the moon. There’s nothing quite like waking up to a fresh blanket of white with animal tracks stitching across it.

These weeks are a small pause in the year - a time to settle in, to appreciate the warmth of home, to share good food, and to look both backward and forward at once. The farm’s seasons circle on, but winter always gives us a moment to stand still and notice just how far we’ve come since spring.
Here’s to quiet mornings, fields dusted with frost, and the gentle glow of the holidays. Winter is coming, and we’re ready to welcome it.
