Sheepdog Chronicles:
Tales from Our Farm

Circles and Seasons

The farm has settled into its autumn rhythm—the soft hum of change before winter’s stillness. The lambs, once wobbly and small, are now sturdy and sure-footed, filling out their frames as they graze the last of the season’s grass. Watching them, it’s hard not to think about how quickly time passes here—how one season folds into the next almost without pause.

Out in the fields, the sheep are in breeding season once again. The ewes move with calm familiarity, the rams full of purpose. There’s a quiet energy in the flock—an unspoken knowing that we’re already laying the groundwork for next spring’s lambs. Farming is full of circles like this—beginnings nested inside endings, and the constant reminder that the work never truly stops; it just shifts.

Hay is coming in now, stacked high and sweet-smelling, a comfort against the cold months ahead. Each bale represents a kind of security, the simple assurance that the flock will be well-fed when the pastures rest under frost. It’s one of those deeply satisfying chores—the kind that leaves you tired but content, hands scratchy, heart full.

And while the fields grow quieter, the winter farmers market has begun again—a welcome ritual of its own. It’s a gathering place for familiar faces, a space where the hum of community replaces the buzz of summer activity. There’s something grounding about showing up with what the farm provides, season after season, and seeing how the work of one small place can still feed others in so many ways.
November on the farm is about preparation and trust—doing the work now so the months ahead can unfold smoothly. It’s a slower rhythm, but no less full. The dogs know it, the sheep know it, and in our own way, so do we.
